Pass the gravy and oh yes, the batteries too, Please.

Well, here it is again, the holiday season. The time we celebrate with family and friends and give glory and praise to whatever God we believe. And I hope you do, for your sake! For myself, I celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. No offense if you believe otherwise but you know me, I always think I'm right and everyone else is, well, everyone else. Time to move on now as I am using up precious space to rant with.

As most of the regular readers noticed their was no Rant last month. (Editors Note: As if he has any regular readers!) That was because I took a vacation from my regular duties and decided to try my hand at home remodeling. What a mistake that was, but that's another story.

I found myself blissfully content and uninspired to complain about anything because I stayed away from the source of all my angst. COMPUTERS! Why all of you readers are attracted to these bloody things like moths to a flame I will never know but they drive me crazy. Let me rephrase that. People and computers drive me crazy. When was the last time you called your plumber to ask how to repair a broken pipe? You don't, you call him and have him come fix it. When was the last time you called your auto mechanic and asked for advice on how to do a tune-up on your car? NOT. Better yet, call the dealer and ask them. It will make for great entertainment around the repair shop. But with computers it's a different story. How do I do a mail merge? Why won't my printer print? And, you built the dam thing so you tell me how to fix every problem I have with it! So here we wait dutifully next to the phone waiting for your call. This is the life we have chosen for ourselves and no matter how much I complain I really do love it. Especially the calls from the little old lady who says my PC had an "Illegal Operation" while online. I wasn't looking at anything bad she said. I was just in the virtual flower shop! Ah, those precious moments.

But you were wondering if there was a point to this article and I'll get to it now. There are a lot of really nifty products out there that will light up anyone's Holiday wish list. Everything from High-End earplugs for your I-Pod at $150.00 (My personal favorite) as well as a plug in to the computer port next to the steering wheel of any new car that collects drive data that you can download into your PC via that magical little cable we call USB. You can now have accurate data about speeds and distances your young teenager has been driving the family car with. Very sneaky and very nice. If you want to know the perfect gift to give year go to the hardware stove and buy one of those long trays of batteries for each and every young person you know and watch those card and letters of "Thank U's" come rolling in. Everyone and I mean everyone needs portable power sources to run the gaggle of gadgets that fill our stocking each year.

And if you think I'm off base with this when did you get a "Wow, this is great!" for a set of Lincoln logs, tinker toys or PlayDough. Your silence is answer enough.

So wishing you all a blessed Holiday Season and a wonderful new year. I would like to hear of what great computer gifts you received. Just email me at rants@vccomputers.com. Next month: USB & DSL, Three letter words we can't live without.
