Is All That Power Necessary?

That's It, I've had it! It happened again. PC Hardware is starting to make a dramatic change again. Every time this happens we hear about all the benefits of progress but we never hear about the obsolescence of our stuff. I know, I know, we're told we really need these improvements and how much better our lives will be, but really? How much of what we progress to do we really need? If I asked you what you spend most of the time on your computer doing 80% of it is probably word processing and Email. Which Windows 95 will do, albeit a little slower than what we're used to now.

But do most of us really need all this processing power. If you are a man you would probably say "Hell Yeah" you never have enough power. BUT REALLY guys, how often do we drive at 100mph? And then you say OK fine but it's nice to have if you need it. And there's the argument. It is nice but not always necessary to have all this power and speed. But it makes us feel better. How many of you actually sue that 120GB hard drive you're sitting on? I see a couple of hands go up. Most computers use 10GB of disk space with a 20GB drive giving us ample extra room for next week. I can't even purchase a 20 GB hard drive any more. And if I sell you a system with a 40GB drive you'll fell shortchanged because your neighbor bought the COSTCO PC with triple that for less! Boy that makes me feel good.

And what about video cards? I have never wasted more money in life than by paying too much for video cards that don't do anything. When was the last time you used 8X AGP? Heck, I wouldn't even know the difference. Unless you're doing the latest 3D gaming why bother spending money on something that you cannot tell the difference. I've always wanted to show what a waste video is setting up identical systems with a MX400, MX440, FX5200, FX5600, FX6700, FX6800. just to see if you can pick out any difference. So put you money into something that will really make a difference in your life like a great big monitor and a really comfortable chair. Trust me, if you do that you'll enjoy your PC experience much more.

What I'm trying to say is there are very few of us that use or need all the power we have available to us. Or maybe this its God's justice by giving less time to wait on the PC to run our programs to make up for all the extra time we spend on the 101 FWY. So while you're waiting to traverse Camarillo to get to my office to order a new PC. I'll be trying to figure out what to sell you. Celeron, Pentium 4, 400, 533, 800mhz FSB, XEON, Intel Itanium 2 Processor, Athlon, Athlon XP, Athlon 64, Duron, Sempron, Opteron, Centrino and this is just processors. I'll need all that extra time it'll take you to get to my office to figure out what to do. Then again why ask me just go to any store that sells PC's and ask them to explain what this all means. I'm sure they know.
